Daran Ponter

Regionalist, policy guru, skier

“Local government is essential. It’s how communities organise themselves and deliver the services that make daily life possible.”

Before being elected to Greater Wellington Regional Council, Daran built a career in public policy, with a focus on Māori development, resource management and Treaty settlements. One of his biggest insights since joining the sector? Just how much local government shapes our everyday experience — from turning on the tap and catching a bus to the parks, libraries and footpaths we rely on.

He’s proud to represent a region known for its diversity, compactness and fiercely independent thinking and for a population that genuinely values public transport.

Looking ahead, Daran wants to see a smarter balance between central and local responsibilities, and clearer, more joined-up systems for funding and collaboration.

As for who makes a great elected member? “Someone who’s curious, balanced and willing to listen. You don’t need to arrive as a leader. That develops with experience.”

Outside of council, you’ll find him skiing, gardening, travelling or enjoying kapa haka (strictly as an audience member).
