Submission on Illustrative National Policy Direction

LGNZ supports the concept of a single national policy direction as a way to resolve tensions across the Planning and Natural Environment Acts. However, the current illustrative national policy direction requires further development to provide the coherence, balance, and level of detail needed to fulfil that role.

We encourage the Government to incorporate local government feedback on this initial NPD into the version that will be formally consulted on in 2027. Councils will be significantly affected as the frontline messengers of the NPD, and it is critical that their feedback is reflected to ensure the direction is clear, practical, and workable.
