LGNZ welcomes National’s commitment to share visitor levy with local communities

LGNZ is welcoming the National Party’s announcement today on sharing International Tourism Levy (IVL) revenue directly with local communities that host international visitors.

LGNZ has long advocated for a greater share of tourism-related funding to flow directly to councils, recognising the significant role local communities play in supporting New Zealand’s tourism economy.

LGNZ President Rehette Stoltz says the announcement marks a significant shift in how tourism funding is distributed.

"This is a step change from contestable funding mechanisms used in the past, and it provides much needed certainty for councils.

"For many years ratepayers have carried much of the cost of providing the infrastructure visitors rely on, from local roads to public toilets, parks and community facilities.

"A commitment to return a share of the international visitor levy revenue directly to councils recognises that tourism places real demands on local infrastructure and services."

LGNZ Infrastructure Reference Group Deputy Chair and Queenstown Mayor John Glover said the announcement was good news for councils and ratepayers.

“Overall, $17 million represents what would otherwise be a significant impact on ratepayers.

“So we welcome this announcement and we want to make sure that this pre-election promise is turned into action if they’re in Government.”

Rehette Stoltz said while the announcement is an encouraging step, the conversation about sustainable funding should continue.

“LGNZ would be keen on exploring more such mechanisms that create more incentives for councils and communities to invest in core infrastructure supporting economic growth."
