The Reforms

We are changing how we make an impact.   Because making an impact is how we bring about positive change for local government and your communities. This year sees significant reforms across three major areas and we want to make sure any changes are right for today, as well as for the future.

An independent Panel is reviewing the system of local governance. To keep enhancing our communities’ wellbeing, we need to take a fresh look at some basic questions, and reframe our approach. This is an opportunity for a once-in-a-generation reset.

The Government is proposing four new, large water service delivery entities to manage our drinking, waste water and storm water. The scale of the entities means they would be able to borrow enough to fund the investment needed in water services and infrastructure over the next 30 years

“What needs to be avoided at all costs is charging ahead with the approach that ‘anything is better than the RMA’. Critical appraisal is required to ensure the proposed changes unquestionably improve the status quo.”

LGNZ President, Stuart Crosby.
