LGNZ Freshwater Forum 2019
As many of you are aware the Government is well-advanced on progressing regulatory changes as part of its Essential Freshwater reform package. Lead by Minister for the Environment David Parker and Minister of Agriculture Hon Damien O'Connor, the aim of this work is to rapidly improve the quality of New Zealand’s freshwater bodies.
LGNZ supports the environmental outcomes of this work, but notes that these changes are likely to represent a significant change to how the productive sector operates, which may have a substantial knock-on effect for communities.
The Regional Sector has had the opportunity to review the proposals and provide advice to the Government. The Regional Sector now welcomes the opportunity to brief you on the package and the possible implications for communities in New Zealand. We are currently working to understand in greater detail the potential economic and social impacts and we want to share this material with you at the Forum.
As a local body representative affected by these proposed changes, you are invited to the Forum to discuss the package and its likely effects.
The Forum will be an opportunity for you to hear about:
· the detail of the freshwater proposals;
· the economic implications of the proposals;
· the implementation challenges; and
· where priority should be given.
Your attendance and participation at the Forum will be vital in shaping LGNZ’s freshwater position.
