Councils nationwide are enjoying the opportunities of a tourism industry which is now New Zealand’s leading exporter.  But it comes with pressures also.  With the continued growth projected, there is a need to re-look at how councils can manage tourism pressures in their areas.  As part of EquiP’s tourism series, tourism industry professionals David Hammond and Craig Wilson combine to discuss destination management and how councils can effectively organise tourism management in their councils.

During this 45-minute webinar, you will learn about:

  • effective destination management planning;
  • pay-for models to offset the cost of infrastructure on ratepayers;
  • the contents of a destination management plan; and
  • smart management of tourism inside councils and how to integrate the different function.

About the presenters

David Hammond, EquiP Associate

David Hammond provides advice to local councils through his company Hammond Robertson Ltd and is an Associate of EquiP. He has been very active in assisting organisations including LGNZ and MBIE to understand the freedom camping issue, is frequently sought out by the media on the subject and is currently developing a Freedom Camping Strategy for Nelson City Council.

David recently completed his last nine years of a local government career as Chief Executive over two iconic tourism councils and assisted the sector by establishing the Tourism Council Workgroup in 2015. He was recognised for his contributions in the tourism field in 2010 winning both the Tourism Industry Association award for best project in local government in support of the tourism industry, and also won the NZ Post / SOLGM Award for Best Project in Local Government that same year.

Most recently, David has been working on webinars for EquiP, informing councils on how to develop an effective freedom camping strategy.

Craig Wilson, Quality Tourism Development Limited

Craig Wilson is director and primary consultant of Quality Tourism Development Limited.  Craig specialises in sustainable tourism development including strategic planning and implementation, new product development, customer experience management, marketing and brand development, community/cluster development and facilitation.

He has 25 years' experience in the corporate and consulting environment in both New Zealand and Australia, including 20 years in the New Zealand tourism sector.  He was General Manager, Marketing and acting CE for Tourism Auckland.  Prior to this, Craig was Marketing Manager and Business Development Manager for Tranz Scenic (the long distance passenger train division of Tranz Rail) and Area Sales Manager for BP Oil in Sydney, Australia.

Craig’s strengths in strategic planning, marketing, branding, business development and business management result from his experience in sectors as diverse as tourism, energy, retail, fast moving consumer goods and local government.
