2019 Elected Member Induction

2019 elected member induction

So, what is induction?

Induction is the process of introducing a newly elected member to their council environment.  It begins from the moment the prospective candidate reads the advertisement calling for candidate nominees and continues with their training and development once elected.

What are the benefits of induction for newly elected members?

The EquiP-led induction workshops held throughout the country during November and early December provide a valuable opportunity for newly elected members to experience being part of the bigger national picture. It’s an opportunity to meet other elected members and receive a high-quality, targeted and proven national induction to support your local council’s own induction programme.

What are the benefits of induction for re-elected members?

For re-elected councillors it is an excellent opportunity to reset, brush-up on the latest best practice, support newly elected members and network with other councillors.  We highly recommend both new and re-elected members attend.

About the EquiP Induction Workshops

The workshops will be covering high-level, nationally relevant issues affecting the local government sector, as well as covering crucial high-level introductions to key areas such as governance, strategy and the role of an elected member. This workshop does not get into the nitty-gritty of technical knowledge required for the role as this is covered elsewhere in the induction framework, specifically for those who need to learn these points. Instead, it supports elected members to start their good governance tasks by making effective decisions together for the benefit of their communities.

Note that these induction workshops are not suitable for community board members. Additional half-day workshops will be run concurrently at some locations for community board members. Details will be coming soon about that.

For the broader context of where these induction workshops fit in the wider governance development programme, see this overview of the EquiP induction and governance capability development programme here.
