March to May 2009: Consultation workshops
MfE is hosting public consultation workshops to inform your submissions on the "Waste Minimisation in New Zealand" discussion paper (due for release in late March 2009). This document includes revised targets for the New Zealand Waste Strategy and comprises five main parts:
-
revising targets for the New Zealand Waste Strategy
-
identifying products that are priorities for product stewardship
-
identifying funding criteria for the Waste Minimisation Fund
-
monitoring waste in New Zealand
-
improving the operation of the waste levy.
The workshops are also a chance for you to ask any questions you may have on the Waste Minimisation Act. Local government meetings will also involve an outline of the content in "Waste Management and Minimisation Planning: Guidance for Territorial Authorities" (outlined in the next section).
Workshop dates
Copies of the discussion paper and a full schedule of workshops will be available on the Ministry's website from 18 March 2009.

Submitting your ideas on the discussion document
You are not expected to make a submission on the day of your workshop. From 14 March to 19 May 2009, you will be able to make submissions on the discussion paper on the Ministry for the Environment website. The website will have an online submission tool to help guide you through the process. Submissions received will be considered when the Ministry is developing the work programmes covered in the discussion paper. Due to time constraints late submissions cannot be accepted.
May 2009: Guidance for local authorities on Waste Management and Minimisation Planning
MfE will be releasing a guide titled "Waste Management and Minimisation Planning: Guidance for Territorial Authorities" in May 2009. This guidance provides advice to territorial authorities on developing effective and efficient territorial authority waste management and minimisation plans. It has been developed with the assistance of a working group of territorial authority waste officers, Local Government New Zealand representatives, and other experts in the area of waste management and minimisation planning.
1 July 2012: Plans
Waste Management and Minimisation Plans must be reviewed by this date.
For more information please contact Amy-Jane Millward (Senior Adviser, Local Government Group) at amy-jane.millward@mfe.govt.nz or phone (04) 439 7471.
Also in March: Cleanfill consultation
Ministry for the Environment are also working on a document titled "Developing a Consistent Approach to Managing Cleanfills in New Zealand". This document provides step-by-step guidance on approaches local authorities can take to better control Cleanfill sites and help create a more level playing-field for operators and industry players. MfE are hosting a separate set of workshops in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin for you to provide input into this document.
Click here for details of these workshops.
At the Auckland meeting, there will also be a session to discuss Auckland Regional Council's new operative rules for Cleanfills.
