Broadband Investment Workshop Series

Recent announcements on government's investment programme in high-speed broadband infrastructure has caused a flurry of interest from councils. From 22-30 September, Local Government New Zealand in association with the Ministry of Economic Development, EDANZ and Internet NZ, conducted a national series of workshops. These were attended by councils, economic development agencies, telecommunications carriers, lines companies and ICT groups.

The workshops sought to provide  details on the Broadband Investment Fund and resources available to help regions develop their business case for the deployment of broadband infrastructure. James Hettrick from California also presented on the role of councils in broadband infrastructure, how they can fund this exercise and what new technology options can be used to reduce deployment and maintenence costs. Cities that James has worked with have receievd international acclaim as "smart" cities.
