LGNZ offers support as Tauranga faces environmental disaster
As the city of Tauranga faces what is expected to be New Zealand's worst environmental disaster Local Government New Zealand offers Tauranga City Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the community the full support of the local government sector.
As the disaster unfolds the strength of the community is shining through as hundreds of volunteers help with cleaning up the beaches and care for wildlife affected.
There are many challenges to be faced in responding to this disaster in terms of handling possible hazardous material from the containers and the oil washed up on the beach.
"The future ramifications of this disaster for the city and the region are still unclear but LGNZ and the local government sector are there to support the city and regional council should it be required," said LGNZ President Lawrence Yule.
