Wellbeing Awards to celebrate the remarkable in local government

Local Government New Zealand will be celebrating the remarkable in local government next year with the inaugural Local Government New Zealand Wellbeing Awards.

The awards will shine the light on remarkable environmental, social, cultural and economic projects councils in New Zealand undertake.

The awards are a new development for LGNZ and have been made possible with the support of our four foundation sponsors the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry for the Environment, the Department of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Development.

"We hope these awards will be a springboard for future awards with the support of councils and the private sector.  We do believe in that challenging times it's important to take stock of our successes and for us as a sector to gather together and recognise our achievements," said LGNZ President Lawrence Yule.

These awards aim to help build a more positive perception of local government in our stakeholders and our communities.

An exceptional panel of judges who individually are acknowledged stars in their respective fields will assess the entries.  They are:

  • Professor Peter Hughes Victoria University School of Government and former CE of MSD
  • Kerry Prendergast - chair of the Environmental Protection Agency and former Mayor of Wellington
  • Basil Morrison- chair of the Local Government Commission
  • Sue Kedgely - former Green Party local government spokesperson and local government councillor.

Entries for the awards open in February and winners will be announced in July next year on the night of the LGNZ conference dinner.

Further information on the awards will be available on this website early in 2012.
