Local government and economic development
What is the role of local government in growing the economy?
A new addition to the suite of KnowHow training our Economic Leadership workshop looks at and discusses the critical role of local government in the future development of New Zealand's economy.
The workshop is built around the BERL Economics local government economic indicators framework, commissioned by Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ).
The workshop will be led by experts in the economic development field across local government and economics. New Zealander of the Year Sir Paul Callaghan will also address the workshop speaking about the thinking behind leadership.
From this workshop participants will take away a comprehensive resource to help them understand their council's economic contribution and how this aligns with the government's economic growth agenda. It will also give participants an understanding of the wider leadership role they can play in growing their local economy
The workshop opens with a group discussion on the concept of economic leadership then using the BERL report, participants will examine how to develop, support and drive a vision, strategise and plan for economic growth.
Discussions will also look at the alignment of central government and local government investment and case studies will be used to illustrate projects that tie in with central government's economic growth agenda.
