Post-conference: focusing on the future

Focusing on the future was the theme of the Local Government New Zealand annual conference, held on 11-12 July in Wellington.

Entrepreneurs, educators, politicians and IT gurus spoke about their ideas for the future of local government, and how elected members will play a great role in defining and driving an aspirational vision for their communities.

As a sector which can influence and affect economic development, tourism, the natural environment and social and cultural wellbeing in our cities and regions, local government will have its eyes on the prize as we move forward through this year's general election and beyond.

The Simpson Grierson welcome reception and Fulton Hogan conference dinners gave the 500 delegates opportunities to reconnect and network with other elected members, council staff, and central government decision-makers.

Presentations from the conference's speakers are now available online.

At the Annual General Meeting of LGNZ, President Lawrence Yule was re-elected unopposed and Vice President John Forbes retained his position after a ballot.

The 2012 annual conference will be held in Queenstown on 16 to 17 July.
