Diversity growing gradually in local government sector

Initial results from LGNZ's recent elected members survey are in and they show the diversity of the sector is growing gradually.

In comparison to results from a similar survey following the 2007 local body elections, there has been a small increase in the proportion of new elected members, larger  numbers of elected members under 25 years of age and over 65 and also an almost two per cent increase in Māori elected members.

Results also showed a generally high level of awareness of LGNZ and the role the organisation plays in the sector.

In a new addition this year, the survey included questions about LGNZ's communications with members and professional development offerings.

Responses to the survey offered some good feedback on improvements members would like to see in how and what LGNZ communicates, said LGNZ communications manager Fiona Mayo.

Full results from the survey will be presented to members at the LGNZ conference in Wellington next month and will be available on the LGNZ website.
