Central and local government working together
The relationship between central and local government is crucial to growing a better New Zealand for all New Zealanders.
In the spirit of working together the Central Government Local Government Forum was held at Premier House in Wellington on 26 May.
"A prosperous New Zealand is entirely possible but it will only come from central government and local government working together. The forum was an important opportunity for local government leaders to talk with central government decision makers on how we can make New Zealand a better place together," said LGNZ President Lawrence Yule.
The forum brought together Prime Minister John Key and Cabinet Ministers with portfolios relevant to the local government sector and LGNZ's National Council as leaders in local government.
The 2011 forum was the 17th held between central and local government and was an opportunity for local and central government to review, reprioritise and respond afresh to issues facing communities which need an integrated central government local government approach, said Mr Yule.
Topics raised in the round table discussions included the central government / local government relationship and the desire to continue the positive engagement, plus regulatory reform and how local government and central government can improve regulatory performance and reduce costs.
