Conference 2011 registrations now open

Registrations for the 2011 Local Government New Zealand conference, to be held in Wellington from 10-13 July, are now open.

Conference 2011 is about looking ahead:  it asks what, how and why those in the local government sector need to be thinking about the future.

"Councils play a lead role in planning for their communities' future, this is a key role for elected members and an area where they can show leadership," said LGNZ President Lawrence Yule.

With a theme of Future Focus the conference delivers a strong line-up of expert commentators discussing issues and trends looking ahead.

The conference brings together futurist Melissa Clark-Reynolds, NZICT Group chief executive Brett O'Riley, MFAT chief executive John Allen, educator Ngahi Bidois, Industrial Research chief executive Shaun Coffey and Philips Lighting senior director energy and climate change Harry Verhaar.

In addition to the keynote speakers there are also sessions on spatial planning, the legacy of events, realising Māori potential, the changing future of local government, ultra-fast broadband, population trends and digital strategies.

"Conference 2011 has something for everyone, from green futures and how ICT enables cities to making sense of leadership and creating a strategic vision for New Zealand," said Mr Yule.
