LGNZ professional development continues to grow
LGNZ's professional development programme for elected members is set to get even bigger and more extensive in 2011, with three big new workshops in the pipeline.
The team have just completed work on Financial Governance 201, which debuts in Wellington on 18 April. This builds on the 101 course and looks at financial reporting, rating systems and life-cycle planning. It's designed for members who really want to sink their teeth into financial governance. Further workshops are planned on 27 May in Thames, and 24 June in Rotorua.
If you want to know the secrets to building good relationships with your chief executives, look no further than the new workshop of the same name debuting 30 September in Wellington. You'll learn about the legislative environment around the chief executive-council relationship and how to set meaningful performance targets.
And perhaps the most exciting news, planning has just got underway for an economic development workshop. Local government makes a significant contribution to economic development in New Zealand and this training will give participants tips on developing and building great economic outcomes for communities. Dates for the first economic development workshop are still being finalised but they'll be happening in the second half of 2011.
But before diving headlong into the advanced stream or sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for these great new workshops to start, there's a lot of ground still to cover in the basic four workshops which cover the fundamentals of being an elected member.
"The KnowHow workshops for newly elected members, mayors and chairs were a roaring success last year - but many might be wondering what the next step is," said Anne Gibson, LGNZ's professional development manager.
Mrs Gibson says there are four core workshops every elected member needs to take to really get a grip on the key skills their jobs require.
- Decision-Making - presented by experienced facilitators, the course looks at decision-making processes and case studies throughout New Zealand.
- Financial Governance 101 - an absolute must-attend when it comes to navigating financial documents and terminology.
- Resource Management Act - every elected member in New Zealand has some exposure to the RMA, from directly sitting on hearings to participating in discussions in council. This workshop provides a good grounding in RMA documents and the Act itself.
- Asset Management - this course teaches participants what they need to know when it comes to managing community assets.
"Our workshops are excellent value whether you're just starting off or want a refresher. If you want an extra challenge KnowHow has some new training programmes just around the corner," said Mrs Gibson.
