Showing our support for Queensland
Our thoughts are with our colleagues in Queensland who have been facing some of the worst flooding in Australian history.
I have offered LGNZ's full support to the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Campbell Newman, and the Local Government Association of Queensland as they face the long recovery and rebuilding process ahead of them.
The floods in Queensland this month, together with the earthquake and continuing aftershocks in the Canterbury region, serve as a strong reminder of the need of local government to be prepared for unexpected, unpredictable natural hazards.
On 16 February LGNZ is facilitating a workshop in Wellington between local and central government representatives to discuss risk management in the context of natural hazards. Confirmed speakers include planners together with legal and financial experts who will canvass the wide range of issues involved, in coastal, earthquake and flood conditions.
Further details on the workshop and registration are available here. Given the high interest anticipated we suggest you register your attendance as soon as possible!
