Local government and the economy

What role does local government have to play in the economy?

In the last two years Local Government New Zealand  (LGNZ) has invested in a research project with Berl Economics to identify the contribution local government makes to the economy and what role the sector can play in growing the economy.

The latest piece of research released has been the Local Government Economic Indicators Framework which offers councils some tools to help them measure their contribution to their local economy.  On the back of the framework LGNZ has also published Fresh thinking: a guide to local economic leadership which highlights the role elected members have to play in local economic leadership.

The research has identified leadership as a key activity that local government can undertake to contribute to economic activity.  That leadership comes in the form of the development of a future economic focus and driving a vision and defining a clear pathway into the future.
