Gang guidelines now available

LGNZ's guidelines to help local authorities prevent and intervene in gang-related problems are now available on our website.

The guidelines bring together research and expertise from the New Zealand local government sector and overseas, and cover three different phases of action:  preventing gang-related issues, mitigating existing issues, and enforcement.

LGNZ policy analyst Mariska Wouters says the guidelines provide a vision of creating healthy spaces and good social outcomes for communities - creating communities where gangs cannot thrive.

Councils throughout New Zealand participated in developing the guidelines by providing case studies and answering surveys about their experience.  LGNZ thanks all who took part in helping to create this informative and useful document.

The guidelines are aimed at a wide audience, from the mayors and chairs who can take the lead on this issue to the policy staff and on-the-ground council staff who can adopt and implement the suggested processes.
