LGNZ Releases Model Kerbside Collection Contract
Waste management isn't one of the most glamorous functions councils perform, but it's one of the fundamental roles of local government and something our ratepayers certainly like to see done properly.
A valuable new tool for our members has been picked up by two councils. Dunedin City Council and Waimakariri District Council are the first to implement the new model contract for kerbside rubbish collection, developed by Local Government New Zealand.
This model contract will help ensure there is good practice and consistency throughout the country, and was developed by LGNZ with input from territorial authorities and waste industry representatives. It's an example of how we are working to build local government capability, using collective knowledge and effort to help individual councils operate effectively.
I hope to see more authorities pick up this model contract and put it to good use.
Since each authority has its own needs and requirements, the model contract will need to be tailored to fit the different circumstances councils face. It's a great starting point, and any changes should be signposted so that it's obvious where your own contract differs from the standard - which will hopefully become a recognised norm for councils.
The full model contract is available here.
