Crown Law decision on casting votes released
The Crown Law decision on casting votes has been released. This follows from Local Government New Zealand's complaint to the Ombudsman seeking the release of that opinion.
As you may be aware, the Government has previously refused to make the opinion public. The Department of Internal Affairs also turned down our official information request for the opinion.
You can now access the legal opinion on DIA's website.
National Council resolved at its July 2003 meeting to have Local Government New Zealand seek a declaratory order on this issue. We are currently working on this. We will keep you up to date on our progress.
