2011 Community Board Best Practice Awards
Winners of the 2011 Community Board Best Practice Awards were announced at the Community Boards' Conference in Rotorua in May, with the Supreme Award going to the Henderson-Massey local board for their work on the Lancaster Memorial in Henderson, west Auckland.
The awards were created in 2003 by the Community Board Executive Committee (CBEC) to recognise and celebrate projects undertaken by community, and now also local, boards.
"The awards recognise the contribution community and local boards make to excellent local government and foster the exchange of good practice and innovation. Over time, the awards will build a toolbox of ideas and projects for community and local boards to implement in their own areas," said Local Government New Zealand governance manager Mike Reid.
Henderson-Massey Local Board picked up the supreme award and the heritage category prize on behalf of the former Henderson Community Board. The Lancaster Memorial Project began in 2005 with the community board playing a lead role in the development and creation of a lasting memorial to honour aviators from Henderson who lost their lives over Luxembourg during World War ll.
In their considerations the judging panel acknowledged the community board's extensive collaboration in the project and the fact that the memorial complemented the community's existing heritage features.
