Becoming an elected representative of your community is a great honour. It's an exciting opportunity to make a difference to the people around you, but it can also present new challenges. To be successful you need to quickly get to grips with the workings of local government and understand your role.
Key Learnings
This one day (some locations are half day/half day) workshop covers a broad range of areas to help you get up to speed on life as an elected member. We cover relevant legislation, your responsibilities and offer tips for successful leadership. It designed for all elected members - from district, city and regional councils.
We cover:
- The local government system
- The Local Government Act
- Decisions making and long-term planning
- Regulation and the Resource Management Act
- Ethics, conflicts of interest and freedom of information

Workshop fees
- Members: $450 + GST per participant.
- Non-members: $500 + GST per participant.

Cancellation policy
An appropriate substitute, ie elected or staff member, is welcome 24 hours prior to the workshop commencement. Please advise the replacement's name for printing purposes. A full refund will be given if cancellation is received 3 working days prior to the commencement of the workshop. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than 3 working days prior to workshop commencement.
LGNZ reserves the right to substitute facilitators or reschedule or cancel workshops in circumstances beyond its control.
