Economic Leadership

Using civic leadership to encourage economic growth

Strategic changes. Future investment

As an elected member you have an opportunity help shape the future of your region (and of New Zealand). The economic environment in New Zealand is changing, and to to build a successful economy change needs to occur at the grass roots level - locally across New Zealand.

This workshop is built around the specially-commissioned BERL local government economic indicators framework. Using this ground-breaking resource we discuss local government's critical role in the future development of New Zealand's economy.

The plus factor:

You will take away a comprehensive resource to help you understand your councils economic contribution and how this aligns with the government's economic growth agenda. It will give you an understanding of the wider leadership role you can play to grow your local economy.

Key learnings

We open the session with a group discussion on the concept of economic leadership. Using the BERL report, we examine how to develop, support and drive a vision, strategise and plan for economic growth. Discussions then centre on the alignment of central government and local government investment. Case studies illustrate projects that tie in with central government's economic growth agenda.

Topics include:

  • The BERL local government economic indicators framework
  • Role of local government in economic development
  • Strategic alignment with central government's economic priorities
  • Your council's leadership role in the economy
  • Communicating with stakeholders
