Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a cost for the workshops?

We deliver workshops across the country to over 1,000 elected members every year. Although we have some funding, we use this to develop workshop materials and pilot new workshops. If we didn't charge for the workshop we might be able to give each current member one free workshop. However, there would be no new workshops developed and nothing to offer in the future. Like councils, we take a long-term approach so that we can benefit current and future elected members and their councils.  Prices will vary depending on the size of the workshop and the costs of holding it.

Although there is a fee for the workshop, we try to cut costs where possible by:

  • using council in-house facilities where practical

  • delivering the workshop locally to reduce travel costs and time for elected members

  • using expert facilitators and specific local government and council "hands on" material

Note: we strongly encourage anyone experiencing financial barriers to attending workshops to contact us.

What workshops do you recommend?

We recommend councils budget for each member to attend up to nine workshops during their three-year term of office, with provision for longer serving members to refresh their skills. We have developed our workshops to complement each other and to provide a broad range of relevant skills.

Why should councils invest in elected members training for what might only be a three-year term?

Elected members come from all walks of life and bring a wide-range of skills to their roles. There is however some fundamental knowledge that all elected members need to make informed decisions and understand how local government operates. Elected members oversee millions of dollars of expenditure and make choices in a diverse range of areas. Our training will help members to make more effective decisions for their local communities.

Do you have any other training resources?

Local Government New Zealand, in conjunction with SOLGM, DIA and other partners, has developed a range of different training resources. Some are historic and only retained for general interest, so please note the publishing date. You can also take a look at our library for a comprehensive list of publications.
