New Mayors' Refresher Workshop 
Within the first month after a local government election Local Government New Zealand holds a two day workshop for new mayors focusing on some of the skills and attributes that will help mayors lead their councils and achieve their objectives.
The workshop covers the following topics:
- the role of the mayor
- useful "tips" from experienced mayors on how to succeed in the job
- the challenges facing new mayors
- the secret to building good relationships with chief executives
- an introduction to local government law
- the role of parliamentary organisations such as the Office of the Auditor General
- how to handle the media
- an overview of current issues facing the local government sector.
A New Mayors Refresher workshop is held over two days in the middle of the triennium. This typically has sessions for facilitated discussions, considering issues and expectations, panel discussion and speakers. It also provides a valuable networking opportunity which can provide ongoing benefits for sharing information, discussing and identifying solutions to issues.
