OVERVIEW

E ngaa mana, e ngaa reo, e ngaa hau e wha, teena koutou katoa.

This conference was a great opportunity for local government, community partners, and government agencies to share practices and implement effective strategies for reducing crime and building safer communities.

Building on the two previous conferences of 2002 and 2004, this gathering focused on overcoming the challenges in turning good ideas into practical reality.  Agencies and communities now have a range of theories and tools to assist in enhancing community safety, however, we sometimes face challenges in implementing these.  This conference focused on how we bring the theory to life and make it happen.

The three areas of focus in the conference was Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), Reducing Alcohol Related Harms and Community Based Responses.

Day One
Day One began with a focus on strategies for preventing crime through environmental design featuring a keynote presentation and parallel sessions involving case studies from around the country.  The afternoon centred  on community based initiatives and profiled a number of innovative projects.  The day concluded with the launch of resources for Te Ara Poka Tika Project Walkthrough and refreshments.

Day Two
Day Two centred on approaches for reducing alcohol related harms and profiled best practice initiatives.  In the afternoon a panel discussion provided opportunities for questions, discussion and debate.
