The city meets the sea
Dunedin is a two-port city with an extensive coastline. In the past this was often difficult to access and often uninspiring when you got there. This tour will explore the current and future revitalisation of the inner harbour, and where the city meets the Pacific Ocean. It will visit the Harbourside, the Chinese Garden site, Peninsula walkways and the St Clair esplanade and New Zealand’s only heated saltwater outdoor swimming pool. Each of these illustrate issues such as industrial development, heritage buildings, sister city links, recreation and contract management.
Tourism on a peninsula – the pleasure and the pain
The Otago Peninsula is the home to spectacular scenery and wildlife, and to an eclectic mix of passionate locals. Tourism activity has boomed here offering jobs and new business opportunities. On this tour you will get to see some of the "jewels in the crown" of the Peninsula including the Taiaroa Head albatross colony. Hear from locals what benefits and challenges tourism has sparked and see the effects of tourism on roading, water, sewerage and economic development.
Winter fun in tropical Dunedin
If your first visit to Dunedin comes in winter you might think you’ll need to hasten to a warm fire and glass of Central Otago pinot - but if you want a true Scottish start to your stay, try curling! Dunedin has transformed a draughty old stadium into an international-class skating and curling rink. You can enjoy the companionship of the ‘bonspiel’ and learn the art and traditions of this ancient game while heaving rocks over the ice. You’ll also enjoy a wee dram to keep you warm! The rink is only 5 degrees celsius, so dress warmly.
