Invitation

Invitation from the President of Local Government New Zealand

Basil Morrison

I'm pleased to invite you to join me for this year's Local Government New Zealand Conference, Investing in our Future. The theme carries many interpretations: the work we do to ensure communities are vibrant places to live, and it's about us in an election year, investing in ourselves as elected members.

The theme reflects the funding issues facing local government. We are grateful to have two keynote speakers who will enlighten us on funding issues as we try to balance local community's needs, national needs and our community's willingness to accept rates increases.

Our conference is a unique event. It gives councils an opportunity to draw out issues of shared concern, explore solutions, celebrate successes, and look to the future and the ever-changing role of local government.

Please join me in Dunedin for a wonderful experience, and to farewell those who are not standing this year. Take time out to explore the best that Dunedin, Otago and Southland have to offer.

I look forward to seeing you in July.

Basil Morrison, President
Local Government New Zealand

Invitation from the Major of Dunedin

Peter Chin

"And now the end is near and we must face our final curtain!"

This will be the last Local Government New Zealand Conference of this triennium and what better place to gather than New Zealand's foremost party venue - and we've got 20,000 tertiary students to back that claim!

For those of you determined to mix business with pleasure we've lined up a variety of genuinely thought provoking speakers as well as the usual visits to water and sewerage plants, consideration of the urban-rural interface and debate surrounding the on-going roading versus library rates funding-type issues.

So whether it's your first or your last conference I can assure you of a memorable time - "of which I'm certain".

Peter Chin
Mayor of Dunedin

PS: We'll provide the couches and the slabs of Speights.
