Elected members Governance Handbook

This is your guide to getting started and being effective in local government.

All elected members, new and returning mayors, as well as chairs and senior managers should have their own copy.

Essential reading for new and existing members, as well as senior council officials, the 2016 handbook features:

  • a fresh package design, with a more user-friendly format;
  • updates to reflect significant legislative changes;
  • additional best practice examples; and
  • new sections covering key areas.

The handbook aims to answer all your questions about working in local government, such as:

  • What is local government and how does it work?
  • What do elected members do?
  • How does long term planning work?
  • How do councils make decisions?
  • What is consulting and engaging with communities?
  • What are structures, rules and regulations?
  • What do you need to know about meetings?
  • What do you need to know about funding?
  • What do you need to know about the Resource Management Act?
