Elected Members Induction

Navigating your way through the local government maze can seem daunting at first.  What does being an elected member really involve?  What is expected of you?  What do you need to know?  Who can help you learn it?

EquiP at LGNZ is here to support your journey.  Your professional development starts with this Elected Members Induction where you will learn how to be an effective member and gain an overview of your responsibilities.

Your induction will include the following programmes:

  1. Digital Module* (For new elected members only)
    • Find out what your new role entails
  2. GROW handbook – (For all elected members)
    • Get the information you need to be an effective elected member
  3. Workshop
    • To introduce all elected members to their local government role, their key support networks and start the development journey towards being an effective community leader
  4. Webinar 101
    • To build on the competency gained from the workshop for all elected members
  5. GROW webinar series
  • For all elected members and council staff to build on and discuss the knowledge and issues contained in the GROW handbook.

*The digital module will be available for purchase from 1 October

Value of attending EMI

Join us to ensure you can:

  • Define your new role and the skills and knowledge required to succeed;
  • Increase effectiveness from day one by learning from and interacting with knowledgeable speakers;
  • Build supportive networks; and
  • Start your elected member professional development journey.

Induction provides significant benefits to councils, such as reducing the amount of time it takes for elected members to adjust to their local government environment and reach full capacity.  CEs can trust that induction participants have received consistent messages, built supportive networks and reached the required level of competency to operate as a functional council member.
