National Council Members

 

 

Lawrence Yule is the President of Local Government New Zealand.  Previously he represented the Provincial Sector on the National Council.  He has been Mayor of Hastings District since 2001 where he also won the honour of being Hastings District's youngest-ever Mayor.  He continues to be at the forefront of not only district, but regional initiatives.  Lawrence has particular interests in transport, water and waste water issues.

John Forbes represents the Rural Sector Group on National Council.  He has been a member of the Opotiki District Council since 1986 and was elected mayor in 2001.  John is chair of the LGNZ Rural Sector, co-chair of the LGNZ Rural / Provincial Sector and chair of the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group.  John is also active on a number of national working groups of focusing on such things as climate change, engagement with Māori, economic development, and is a member of the New Zealand Walking Access Commission.

John Bain represents Zone One on National Council and is the Deputy Chair of Northland Regional Council.  He is serving his second term on the council and chairs the transport portfolios.  John is also a member of the District Health Board and Chair of the Northland Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Richard Northey represents Zone One on National Council.  Richard is an Auckland Councillor who chairs the Accountability and Performance Committee.  He has been active in local government for 17 years as a councillor on Auckland City Council and LGNZ Zone One Chair since 2001.  Before entering local government Richard was a Labour Member of Parliament from 1984-90 and 1993-96.

Meng Foon represents Zone Two on National Council.  He has been involved with local government for over 16 years and is mayor of Gisborne District Council, a unitary authority.  Meng is also a New Zealand Rugby League board member.

Jono Naylor represents Zone Three on National Council.  He was elected mayor of Palmerston North City Council in 2007 after serving as a city councillor for the previous six years.  During his time as an elected member Jono has been a strong advocate for policies which develop the strengths of Palmerston North, and has worked to improve the profile of the city.

Adrienne Staples represents Zone Four on National Council.  She is serving her third term as Mayor of South Wairarapa District and has a strong interest in resource management, particularly the interaction between the metropolitan cities and their rural neighbours.  This includes the question of urban type development on productive rural land and the impact of urban expectations on rural communities.

Maureen Pugh represents Zone Five on National Council and is the Mayor of Westland District Council.    She was first elected to Westland District Council in 1998 as a councillor and then elected as Mayor in 2004.  Maureen has been a member of the national Freedom Camping Forum since 2007.  Maureen has also been the LGNZ Zone Five Chair.

Tracy Hicks represents Zone Six on National Council and is the Mayor of Gore District Council.  He was first elected Mayor of Gore District Council in 2004 with the role being fulltime since 2005.  Tracey has a long association with local government dating back to 1980 and has served on regional, district and borough councils.  Tracey is also chair of the Community Trust of Southland.

Len Brown represents the Metro Sector on National Council and is the Mayor of Auckland Council. 

Len Brown entered politics when he was first elected to the Manukau City Council in 1992, serving as a councillor until 2004. He also served as chairperson of the Counties Manukau Health Council.  Len was elected mayor of Manukau City council in 2007 before taking on the role of mayor of the newly amalgamated Auckland and the first Auckland Council in October 2010.

Dave Cull represents the Metro Sector on National Council and is the Mayor of Dunedin City Council.  He was born and raised in Invercargill.  He was elected Dunedin City Council Mayor at the 2010 local body elections.  Since 2007 Dave has been heavily involved in the Dunedin community having sat on various steering groups and committees covering economic development, technology and the environment.

Stuart Crosby represents the Metro Sector on National Council and is the Mayor of Tauranga City Council.  He has been an elected representative since 1986 serving as chairman on various committees and a period as Deputy Mayor.  Stuart has a business background both in the electrical contracting and building industry. He now devotes all of his time to the position of mayor both within council and to the wider community.

Brendan Duffy represents the Provincial Sector on National Council.  He was elected Horowhenua District Council Mayor in 2004 after serving nine years as a councillor including three years as deputy mayor and chair of the Community Assets Committee.  Brendan is also LGNZ Zone Three chair and co-chair of the Rural / Provincial Sector.

David MacLeod represents the Regional Sector on National Council.  He is serving his fourth term as an elected member on the Taranaki Regional Council and his second as chair.  David also serves on the boards of Port Taranaki Limited, and Paraniniha Ki Waitotara (PKW) Incorporation.

Fran Wilde represents the Regional Sector on National Council and is the Chair of Greater Wellington Regional Council.  She has held a variety of leadership positions in the public and private sectors.  These include Member of Parliament for Wellington Central, government minister, Mayor of Wellington city, chief executive of Trade New Zealand, and chair and / or director of a range of privately held or listed company boards.
