From the IoD

IOD 14 RGB LS BIG TransparentThe Institute of Directors (IoD) is the professional body for directors in New Zealand, representing more than 8,000 individuals from across the spectrum of New Zealand enterprise. It connects, equips and inspires its members, to add value across New Zealand business and society through thought leadership, an extensive network, professional governance courses, events and resources.

Divided into eight regional branches, members enjoy a regular programme of local events, workshops, and insights from leading speakers.

Building capability

The IoD offers an extensive suite of courses, equipping directors with the tools to perform effectively at the board table. Run for directors by directors, the IoD’s Director Development courses are highly regarded amongst the governance community and cater for every level of experience.

Recognising the unique challenges faced in local government, LGNZ and the IoD have partnered to develop a tailored programme of workshops to build governance capability across our local authorities.  The KnowHow governance workshop series is designed to provide mayors, chairs, and councillors with a strong grounding in governance, leadership and strategy.  The first course in the series, Applied Governance Essentials for Local Government, covers the fundamental roles and responsibilities of council governance.

Building knowledge

The IoD connects members to the latest in governance thinking from across the globe through its thought leadership hub, the Governance Leadership Centre.  Members have access to a wealth of information through an on-line library of director resources, toolkits and templates.  The Governance Leadership Centre is at the forefront of governance research, policy, and advocacy and regularly issues publications on matters affecting directors.

Building better boards

The IoD offers a range of services to maximise the performance of boards, including evaluation tools, recruitment, and remuneration advice.

The IoD’s BetterBoards on-line evaluation and appraisal tool enables boards to identify strengths and weaknesses, assess their performance as individuals and as a whole, and recognise opportunities to boost performance and improve outcomes.  Under the partnership between LGNZ and the IoD, this service is now available to councils across the country at a special discounted rate. Click here to find out more, or contact the Board Services Team at boardservices@iod.org.nz or by phone 04 499 0076.

The IoD’s corporate membership option, boardWide, offers councils a 20 per cent discount on annual membership subscriptions. As a boardWide member, your council will receive an additional copy of The Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice, a free subscription to boardroom magazine, and access to the IoD’s governance tools, resources, and information.
